Cat urine is not the only thing to be aware of as a responsible cat owner. If your cat frequents, the out-of-doors this puts your home at a higher risk for bacteria and germs brought into your house by your cat. There is nothing that is going to stop this, aside from making your cat strictly an inside pet.
There are at least seven different forms of bacterial and germs your cat may bring into your home. This information can be a bit unsettling, but it does not have to be if your flooring is kept spotless. Not all of these bacteria are dangerous, and it is crucial to know the types.
Another great thing to know is that a lot of the bacteria from pets have no bearing on you or your family. In other words, they are not harmful to you or your children. However, the names of some of these bacteria may make you a bit nervous. Another interesting note is that cats and humans are becoming more able to catch each other's germs. Cats can get sick from human viruses and bacteria as much as we can get sick from what they carry.
Salmonella
A human, cats can be carriers of these bacteria and not be ill from the bacteria that most associated with foodborne bacteria from eating raw meat and eggs. The side effects of these bacteria are diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal cramping. Frequent and proper handwashing is the best prevention for salmonella.
Pasteurella
These bacteria are found in the mouth and upper respiratory tracts of cats. It can cause an infection in the skin, nose, eyes, and ears, and is passed by a bite, scratch, or lick. This germ spreads to a human which cause a significant reaction. Reactions are rapid and require medical intervention. Seek medical treatment early through the administration of penicillin.
Campylobacter
These bacteria are similar to Salmonella. How a human can catch this germ is by eating raw foods, or when hands come in contact with cat feces. This germ causes diarrhea in cats and humans. In a human, diarrhea clears up in about a week. It is vital to keep your yard free from feces as a pet can walk through the feces and bring the germ into the home on their feet. The best prevention is monitoring of the cat to see where they lay and keep that area clean. Frequent hand washing is vital.
Staphylococcus and MRSA
These bacteria are quite common and are found on the skin of cats and humans. The germ enters the body through an open area like a cut or scratch. MRSA is a nasty bacterium that is found to be resistive to many antibiotics. You can get MRSA through the skin to skin contact. Symptoms include swollen and red skin areas, a fever is likely, and side effect exacerbated if the cat or human has a low immunity level.
Streptococcus
This germ causes meningitis and strep throat in humans. Cats do not, as a rule, spread this bacteria that often involve the skin. Pets spread this from one cat to another through the water and feed dish, bedding, Minor side effects are abscesses and infected wounds that call for antibiotic treatment.
Leptospirosis
These bacteria are found in the urine of cats and can be brought into the home on the paws of cats. This germ transmits through mucous contact in contaminated water or urine from an infected cat. Thoroughly disinfect any areas where the pet may have urinated.
Ticks
You no doubt know that the tick causes Lyme Disease. Cats can get tick bites, but cats do not spread this to another cat. If the tick falls off the pet, it can infect a human. Side effects are chills, fever, headache, muscle aches. In a cat side, results may be swollen joints, loss of appetite, weakness, tiredness. Lyme Disease must be treated so that it does not eventually affect the heart or nervous systems. Prevention is a monthly flea and tick prevention program.
